Full Details

The beautiful new publication, Jones Studio Houses: Sensual Modernism (2021, ORO Publishers) is a self-imposed limited look at the 40-year-plus career of Eddie Jones. Almost unheard of outside the southwest United States, Jones has quietly accumulated a body of work ranging beyond residential design to include major federal projects impacting the edges of America.

Jones summarizes his lifelong dance with architecture through the  personal stories of collaboration and inspiration embedded in each house selected for the book. Refusing to repeat himself, the work tests the reality of gravity on a diverse spectrum of interpretive vernacular responses to climate, landscape and function. Although designed by the same hand, the forms vary as much as the choice of materials. Rammed earth, concrete, wood and metal are explored together and separately yet remain subordinate to Jones’ fascination with glass.

“A house is a labor of love,” says Jones, who still uses pencil and paper to do his design work. “When somebody wants me to create a house, I do it. I love working on them.”

Joining Jones for the presentation and a moderated conversation will be Aaron Betsky, author of the book’s introduction, and the Director of the School of Architecture and Design at Virginia Tech. Previously he was President of the School of Architecture at Taliesin. A critic of art, architecture, and design, Mr. Betsky is the author of over a dozen books on those subjects.

A book signing will follow the presentation.
